During WWII did the RAF and RCAF protect convoys?

They could only protect convoys when they were close to the UK and within range of the bases. Quite often have survived the the Atlantic the convoys would then have to sail up the Channel to the southern ports and there the RAF etc would have been called into action as the convoys would come under attack from the Luftwaffe.
